Forerver chemicals: just how clean is your drinking water?

April 11th 2025
Drinking water, sure, but is it free of forever chemicals
So, what are exactly PFAS (Per- & polyfluoroalkyl) ?
Also refered to as forever chemicals: it’s an entire family of chemicals fluorized compounds that are super resistant to degradation.
Since they have the capacity to accumulate in organic tissues and can be very volatile in the environment, it’s kind of important to know how to filter them from your drinking water.
How are you exposed to them?
Studies are still new on the subject, but more and more studies are pointing at food packaging, some textiles (Gor-Tex), antiadhesive coating, makeup and many more manmade products. This forever chemicals end up in our drinking water sources, our lakes, rivers, oceans and thus, end up also in fish and seafood. (source: Think Landscape: what are forever chemicals)
How do PFAS enter the body?
According to studies PFAS can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation or contact, but ingestion remains the most common way it enters our body. You can reduce the ingestion by filtering your drinking water.
Health impacts?
Although studies are really just begining, datas are showing suspicious coincidences, making them a suspect for obesity, diabetes, endocrine disruptors, cancers and more. In fact, WHO has issued directives to restrict usage of some of them as they are considered carcinogenic for mankind. (source : WHO – PFOS and PFOA in Drinking-water)
Some good news
If those PFAS are volatile, you can start by reducing your contact with sources and of course by filteringyou drinking water so we can limit the ingestion. One thing is sure, by reducing your use of plastic of all kinds, you already are tilting the balance on the right side.
Efficient water filters can be installed on the water line for your tap, or on a drinking fountain (indoor or outdoor), on a bottle filler, a water dispenser or water cooler.
One filtration system that really stand out on the matter is RO (Reverse Osmosis, available on the LULIA water dispensers and water coolers, a multi-stage purification process that guarantees drinking water of exceptional purity.
